The Scottish Council on Global Affairs is supporting a series of workshops which explore the historic and contemporary significance of citizenship and the debates around it.

*** Note that this is the second workshop – you can read about the first one here.

We are delighted to invite you to a Witness Seminar on Citizenship in Europe on the afternoon of 2nd September, 2022. This event is part of the work of the Scottish Council on Global Affairs and hosted by the University of Glasgow. It will bring together five practitioners who work closely on questions concerning and surrounding citizenship, including refugees, migration and human rights. These ‘witnesses’ will speak and take questions about their experiences working in these areas. The seminar is intended as a space for addressing the unfolding of the refugee crises as well as proposing future programmes.

The panel speakers include Dr. Sarah Kyambi from Migration Policy Scotland; Joseph Brady, Policy Officer at Glasgow City Council; Jennifer Todd, a lawyer working in refugee and asylum law; Pinar Aksu, a Human Rights and Advocacy Coordinator for Maryhill Integration Network; and Sophie Herxheimer, an artist who works with communities to portray migration and asylum seeking stories. Joining them in open discussion will be a number of academic researchers working in these areas.

The event is open to the public, and we will be working with Sophie Herxheimer to document the themes of the workshop. Ultimately we hope to turn her artistic work and text representations into an online exhibition to be hosted on this site.

The seminar begins at 1pm with opening remarks and closes at 4.30pm. It will be followed by a reception. If you would like to attend, please rsvp here. A more detailed itinerary of the event will be sent out to attendees ahead of the workshop.
